My first Blip :-(

Did you know cream of broccoli soup has chicken broth in it??? I didn't...until AFTER I ate it. :-( Yup, that's right, I'm currently kicking myself! Ugh.... I should have known! I'm so so sad about it. I suppose a blip in my transition to vegetarianism had to happen sometime (although I really wish it didn't).. Lesson Learned - check all soup ingredients before purchasing/eating!!!!

Sorry I haven't been a very good blogger lately. I'm still feeling under the weather and currently working night shifts at work. My whole schedule just changed. The good news is that I now get a week off each month (yahoo!), the bad news is that all my 12 hour shifts are lumped together now in order to get that week off. This poses two new issues. One - When will I run? Before or after my 12 hour shifts and two, when will I get groceries! ugh.... Still not sure about either.

As I write this I'm just finishing up work for the night and I think I'm going to head home, go to sleep and then get up at 4pm and run. Fingers crossed it's not windy and cold as it was yesterday. I'm not sure what's going on around my neck of the woods, but the weather has been CRAZY. It's been shorts and t-shirt weather one day and the next I need my winter jacket back on!

Food wise I've been doing alright. I must confess I haven't been tracking. I suck at myfitnesspal. Entering in everything is so time consuming, but I promise I'll get back to it soon! EA Sport Active has taken a bit of a back seat lately too. I know, not cool...so I promise to get back at that as well!

Anyway, that's it for today. Time to get back to work!

Later gators! Enjoy your day.

One Month ago.....

One month ago today, animals thanked me everywhere.  That's right ladies and gents it's my meatless anniversary today! Betsy, Babe, Chicken Little and Nemo are thanking me (don't worry this is not a pro vegetarian/make the people who eat meat feel like crap blog entry).

This past month has been fantastic. I feel more healthy, I have more energy, and I realized how great food can taste not coming out of a cardboard container that has a big M on the front.  For those who are new to my blog,  I not only went meatless for the animals, but for my health too.  My eating habits prior consisted of grabbing (fatty crap) on the go rather than cooking at home.  It was causing me major gastric issues...duh...of course it would! Turning vegetarian forced myself to cook more! I gotta say food really does taste better when you prepare it yourself.  What an "Ah-Ha" moment that was to finally figure out!   I've made some awesome recipes that are far better than any take-out food I've had before. Sure I have had the occasional craving such as KFC after smelling it once, but other than that I haven't missed meat/sea food at all.  Alternatives such as veggie ground round and meatless chicken fingers have helped with that. I finally can say I've made a true lifestyle change (it's about bloody time!) and I plan to live it for a long time. The pros out weigh the cons ten fold.

This hasn't been the only change I've made in the last month though.  I'm still coffee and pop/soda free after 11 days and you know what? I feel so much better without it. Not just because my heartburn is alot better, but also I just feel more awake! Who would have thunk?  I just finished working my three 12hour day shifts on the weekend and usually I am exhausted by the end. Exhausted even after having  two coffees and maybe two pops a day. Now I down water like a crazy person and feel so much more alive. Sure I was still tired, but not as whipped as I usually was before.  Once again I did have those cravings for pop and coffee for the first few days, but now they are gone. I do allow myself a green/or ice tea once a day, but that's a far cry from the ladder I use to drink.

Exercise is still something I struggle to do, but the goal of the 5K was brilliant if I do say so myself. It keeps me motivated and on track. If I didn't have that, I can bet ya I'd still be a couch potato.

My fitness pal which I just signed up for this past month has been different for me as well. Sure I've dieted before, but getting back to counting is always a huge change. I must say it has also been a bit stressful for me.   I still get overwhelmed by counting calories/points etc.... I find I am getting discouraged by it.  In my heart of hearts I feel I have made great strides with my eating. I am eating 10x more healthy than I ever have in my life. Despite the fact that I eat veggies all the time, my fitness pal tells me I'm over my points and if I don't get out there and work my butt off I'm going to be fat forever.  ugh.... I HATE IT! Yes, it makes me more aware of my intake, but  boy oh boy it's hard.  I'm not going to give up though. No dear, not this time, but to say it's easy would be a lie.  It doesn't help that TOM arrived yesterday which has made me feel famished ALL THE TIME!  Here's hoping it gets better next week!

Overall though, I am still pleased with my progress and realize change does take time and it is something to fight for. I'm worth it dammit and it's about time I started realizing it!

The tracking starts now

Day one of myfitnesspal didn't go so bad. I stayed within my calories (thanks to working out) and found tracking pretty easy. Sure it took some time to add in the foods I was eating, but so what!  A girl has to do, what a girl has to do. After all, this is suppose to be a weight loss blog. It's not a talk about weight loss, but never actually lose weight kind of  blog (which lets face it, it kind of has been for awhile).

I was below my calories, was over my carbs and fibre, but didn't get in enough fat, protein and iron. It's going to be a challenge to make sure I get everything in like I should, but here's hoping I can figure it all out. One thing I did realize though is.....remember those wonderful rice noodles I made? Well....I looked at the package in the store and saw 180cal so bought them. I didn't notice until after I ate my lunch and 1cup of noodles that 180cal was for 1/3cup!!!!! OOPS!!!!!

This afternoon after making my not so wonderful green monster, and eating my left over Phad Thai I ended up doing a bunch of house cleaning. I then decided to suck it up and do a session of EA Sport Active for Wii (damn rice noodles). I decided that I'm going to try to do the 30 day challenge. I set my challenge on easy (for fear of death on any other level) and began my workout. It started to my surprise with a run! I then did lovely (who am I kidding they aren't lovely!) squats, side lunges, bicept curls, tricep curls etc...etc.... I got to say I did better than I have done in the past, but I was still feeling it by the end. The end came quickly though. Almost too quick. Only 16 minutes later. LOL....
I might like this 30 day challenge after all!

This evening I went to the track with a friend and ran week 3, run 1 of C25K. Well stick your hand up in the air because I need a high 5! This girl just ran for a full three minutes tonight!!! Oh yeah, I'm rocking it! This session went like this.....run for 90sec /walk for 90/run for 3 MINUTES/walk for ???/Run for 90/walk for 90/ Run again for 3 minutes and I did it! I'm so pleased with myself. It was hard, but totally doable at the same time. The only thing that started hurting a bit was my shins. I really need those rest days in between. Today was suppose to be a rest day, but I decided to run anyway, because I work all weekend.

Overall, I had a great day today. I feel more in control than I have in a LONG time and it feels great. I can't wait to get stronger and skinnier and more importantly healthier in the future. It's been a long time coming and I deserve it dammit!

Newbie x2

Well, I still am a girl who needs step by step directions to make anything!  This week has been about trying new things and with that being said I thought I would finally get around to making a green monster. For months and months (maybe even over a year now) I have seen fellow bloggers talk about the smoothie coined the green monster.  I thought what the hell, I'll try making it!

I didn't really have any real recipe to follow, but how hard could it be? Well...... apparently harder than I thought!  I used 1 cup of frozen strawberries, 1 cup of pineapple, and 1 cup of baby spinach with 1 cup of   UVAB (which I have drank for months now instead of milk) and some ice. I put it all together and proceeded to crush the ice and puree the remaining ingredience but the bloody blender wouldn't work. It would spin for 2 seconds and then give up. I swear for a second I smelt burning metal. My wonderful green monster was more like a half pink/nasty green slug. YUMMY, just what the doctor ordered!  I FINALLY figured it out that I needed way more UVAB so I added two more cups. I also added another cup of baby spinach to make it more 'green'. Can't be a green monster if it's pink afterall.

Totally not enough UVAB - it only took me 10 min to realize!

More like slug than a slushy or smoothie!

The results..... Well...... Not too good. lol..... It looked nice and green though! Sorry I don't have a picture of the finished product. For some reason it's having a hard time uploading. I'll try again soon.

I ended up drinking it, but I think it needed more strawberries and less ice. All I could taste was ice with a distant flavour of strawberry. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but got to tell ya I was happy not to taste the spinach!  I think because I used frozen strawberries (not thawed like a dummy) instead of fresh I didn't need so much ice. Lesson for next time I suppose.  Anyway, I'm glad I made it and will attempt this puppy again soon!

Besides making something new I also joined something new today!  I am officially a member of myfitnesspal. I found I liked the site better than livestrong....perhaps due to the colour scheme, who knows?  The only thing is that it doesn't have a recipe calculator which kind of sucks. I posted a question on their boards though about how to input my green monster and many other members were helpful giving me tips etc..etc... I even have two new 'friends' because of it! So here I go again, tracking calories this time instead of points. Here's hoping for some great results!
